19-year-old Girl to Fly Around the World in Microlight

Post by Dave Blake »

On 2021 August 18, 19-year-old Zara Rutherford is setting off on the trip of a lifetime: a 32,000-mile journey around the world. More than that, she'll be flying herself. Flying in a bespoke Shark ultralight, which she says is the world's fastest microlight aircraft, Rutherford hopes to set the record for the youngest woman to solo circumnavigate the globe.

Starting in Belgium, Rutherford's route takes her west through 52 countries, five continents, and crosses the equator twice -- first in Tumaco, Colombia, and again in Jambi, Indonesia -- which is part of the Guinness World Records' requirements for an around-the-world flight. She expects the journey to take 2 to 3 months.

Teenage aviator Zara Rutherford has become the youngest woman to fly around the world solo.

The 19-year-old, who has dual British-Belgian nationality, landed at Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport in western Belgium on Thursday (19Jan2022), completing an epic 41-country journey spanning over 52,000 kilometers (32,300 miles), and broke two Guinness World Records in the process.
"I made it," Rutherford, who received a rapturous welcome on her arrival, told reporters.

Not only has she beaten the record held by American Shaesta Waiz, who was 30 when she circumnavigated the globe unaccompanied in 2017, Rutherford also now holds the title for the first woman to circumnavigate the world in a microlight aircraft.
