Poll: What Is Your Primary Flight Sim for SAX Flights?

Post by Dave Blake »

I do this about once a year and it is that time again.

What do you use as your primary flight sim for your SAX flights.
FS9 won last year over FSX 10 to 4. Who will win this year?

This poll will run for 30 days and you can only vote once. Your comments are always welcomed.

How about this? Tell us about your system that you use for flying:
- CPU type and speed
- Operating System
- Ram memory
- Video board
- FSFK or FSACARS
- And maybe your favorite add-ons... WX, ATC, etc.

I use my ACER 5920G laptop with W7 Ultimate 64bit, 2.0GHZ Core 2 Duo Intel Processor, 4GB RAM, 8600M GS Nvidia with 256MB ded but up to 2033MB shrd, 1280X800 (16:10) native screen resolution.

I use FSX in window mode, not full screen, as this laptop is widescreen and I dont like the way FSX stretches everything in full screen mode to make a 4:3 into a 16:10, it s ugly.Yeah FSX native aspect ratio is still 4:3!(hopefully FS11 will have native 16:9)I dont use the WideViewAspect switch in FSX.cfg either as it is the same result but with the zoom out which makes it even worse, I want the zoom at 1: more realistic scenery view and speed rendering! :D that s why I use the 2D cockpit as main view, I dont use the VC, you need to zoom out to fit the entire VC into view, I mean the part you need anyway.People with better native resolution than mine could do better.

I use AS6.5 for weather, FSBuild for naviguation planning, Squawkbox 4 for FSX (yeah I fly on VATSIM), and as most people FSFK for pirep.

Just what I missing is a good yoke, pedals, and throttle quadrants! In the meantime I fly with the keyboard :(, so if anyone knows what is the best gear out there or want to share with us what gear they have, please dont hesitate

I'm flying on a dinosaur - Dell Pentium IV, 3.0 ghz, 2.5gb ram, 250gb FastATA HD, ATI 300x 128mb vid card and a Saitek Evo joystick with about 16 programmable buttons & hat. Fly with FS9, ASv6.5, RC4, TOPCAT, FSFK. Pretty archaic by todays standards, but works pretty well for me. Use a laptop to run my customized checklists, nav/approach charts, etc.

Can't even plan to upgrade to a new system until my 18 y/o son graduates from college in 4 yrs (he starts this fall). He's the last of 4 kids, their needs for pc's for school, laptops for college are a priority over my flight simming. I did inherit a Toshiba laptop though, after one of the older kids upgraded on her own and gave me the one I bought her.

I'm still using FS9 as my primary Flight Sim. I have FSX and it runs pretty good on my system but I guess I'm just too used to FS9 to switch to FSX and FSNav won't run on FSX.

My system:
AMD 2.8G X2 5600 AM2 Dual Core
4GB Ram 800Mhz DDR2
Nvidia 8800GTS 320MB video
Windows XP Home

Main Add-ons:
FSFK
Active Sky v6.5
FSNav
Ultimate Night Environment Pro

Here's my info:

Home built Pentium 4 Dual Core HT 3.01 GHz
XP Pro SP2
2 Gigs Ram
Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT 256mb
ViewSonic 21" Wide/flatscreen VG2230wm
FS9
FSFK
VRoute
Ultimate Traffic
NYC MegaScenery 2004
FlyTampa KTPA
Fly Tampa KMIA
MS SideWinder Force Feedback Joystick

I have no reason to change to FSX at this time. Not enough improvements to require me to buy all my addons again. Let's see if MS comes out with FS11.

I fly a home built
AMD Phenom II X4 925 Processor (quad core)
BioStar TA790GXE Motherboard
8gig Patriot Ram
I have an ACER 22 inch widescreen and an Acer 19 standard flat screen as a second monitor which will be mounted above the wide screen eventually for a more realistic feel for the Overhead panel which I drag to it.
Win 7 Pro 64bit
I fly FSX mainly in Full Screen mode
I fly the PMDG 747 mainly. I have the LVLD 767 installed along with the Eaglesoft Citation x
Smooth as silk. Don't pay attention to framerates its all about smooth flight in FSX

I fly FS9 when I have a taste for the PMDG 737NG or the PSS 777.

One question....what is the benefit of using FS9 over FSX? I have both and am not sure if I can get better graphics (higher level) if I go back to FS9.

FSX has higher detailed graphics then FS9. The trade-off is lower frame rates unless you have a fast system with plenty of Ram and a good video board.

For those waiting for FS11, I would not hold your breath very long. Microsoft disbanded the FS development team not too long ago so FSX may very well be the last release of FS.

No more FSX for me, I am FS9 now, so my FSX count above is not relevant anymore, but I cant undo it, so it should read
FSX: 2 14%
FS9: 12 86%
